Trees and shrubs with deep, well-developed root systems are generally better equipped to withstand heat, drought, and periods between watering. Their roots can access moisture stored deeper in the soil, helping plants remain resilient during the hottest months of the year.
By contrast, plants that receive frequent, shallow watering often develop roots concentrated near the soil surface. These shallow roots can dry out quickly, making plants more dependent on frequent irrigation and more vulnerable to heat stress.
That's why many horticulture professionals recommend deep, less frequent watering rather than short, frequent/daily irrigation cycles. When water penetrates deeper into the soil, roots are encouraged to follow it downward. Over time, this can lead to a stronger, more extensive root system.
Watering schedules should also change throughout the year. Plants typically need more frequent irrigation during the hottest months and less during cooler seasons. Water alone, however, is only part of the equation.
Roots also grow where nutrients are available. When fertilizer is applied - and remains on the landscape surface, nutrients can’t reach the deeper root zone where long-term root development occurs. Delivering nutrients deeper into the soil places them where active roots can access them and continue expanding below the surface.
The goal is simple: provide both water and nutrients where you want roots to grow.
