Many homeowners think of water and fertilizer as two separate parts of plant care. In reality, they must work together.
Plants cannot absorb fertilizer directly from dry granules sitting on the landscape’s surface. Those nutrients must be dissolved by water and flow through the soil and into the root zone – where roots absorb both the water and the nutrients traveling with it. In other words, water is the highway that carries nutrients to plant roots.
In regions that receive regular rainfall, nature does much of this work automatically.
However, many parts of the country don't receive enough consistent rainfall for this process to occur reliably. In arid and semi-arid climates, trees and shrubs often depend on drip irrigation systems as their primary source of water.
This makes irrigation and fertilizer placement especially important.
When fertilizer is broadcast across the soil surface, its effectiveness depends on water reaching the fertilizer granules. But, drip irrigation only wets a limited area of the soil surface around each emitter - and this may not be sufficient to effectively dissolve the fertilizer. Fertilizer granules scattered outside the wetted areas may not dissolve into the soil, whatsoever.
By contrast, when fertilizer is introduced directly into the irrigation water or placed where it can readily dissolve into the irrigation flow, nutrients immediately enter the pathway that transports them through the soil. Instead of waiting for rainfall to move nutrients downward, the irrigation system itself becomes the delivery mechanism.
The goal isn't simply to apply fertilizer—it's to help nutrients enter the water stream that carries them to the root zone.
Because without water, fertilizer is simply potential. With water, it becomes nourishment.
